I
f you were to read only one chapter in this book and apply Personal Semiotics to your life, your emotional health is where to start. Your outlook, attitude and beliefs may be the most important factors in determining your success and happiness. They exert exponential influence over all other aspects of your life. And if you were to remember only one thing from this chapter, it’s that today may be a better day than yesterday and tomorrow better still. In plotting your emotional health, it’s essential to keep in mind that regardless of what you may be feeling at the moment, things can change for the better very quickly.
Your emotional health, perhaps more than any other facet of your life, is fluid. Change is constant. No person is resistant to the highs and lows of emotional tides. This is normal and expected. Our challenge is to work toward moderating the emotional waves so that the low points are milder in their depth or intensity.
Picture yourself standing on a beach, watching waves gently rolling into shore. They symbolize your emotional feelings that wash over you each moment, minute or day. On some days, the sun is shining; the waves are gentle and warm, and you’re feeling continually nurtured. You’re in the Caribbean in April. At other times, it can seem like you’re on the craggy coast of Maine in February with storm winds howling, cold wet air whipping your face and high choppy breakers pounding in.
The goal is to see yourself with Divine power to control nature. You have the ability to change the climatic conditions that impact the height, power, warmth and impact of the waves. You want to smooth out the turbulence and avoid the up and down extremes that create an emotional rollercoaster and douse your happiness.
And during those times when it feels like the waves are crashing in, and you’re not sure how much longer you can withstand the cold water, picture your emotional self tucked inside L.L. Bean all-weather gear. Your positive thoughts and beliefs will wrap you in warmth and protection against the current emotional conditions. When it subsides, and it will, you’ll have new strength, confidence and courage.
