In 2006, the publishing and spiritual worlds were turned upside down by the phenomenal popularity of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The Secret’s overall message is that each person has the power to create his or her destiny because of the “law of attraction.”
For those not familiar with the law of attraction, this chapter is an introduction. I encourage you to do your own exploration beyond this book, and I’ve cited some good resources.
The law of attraction states that whatever you wish for, or focus on, you will attract. This means that if you’re longing for a puppy, puppies will start springing up everywhere in your life. If you’re fascinated by Paris, you may find yourself with the opportunity to go there. And if you’re worried about the security of your job, you may find yourself laid off. It can be a very rewarding or cruel reality depending on how your mind is focused. So you need to be careful with your thoughts.
The Secret teaches that “the Universe” (a term used by many to describe a Divine higher power) is unwavering in its faithfulness to your demands. It is like your own private genie in a bottle. That’s because the Universe gives you free will to create your own destiny.
For many people who grew up within traditional religious practices, this can be hard to understand and accept. Is The Secret putting humans on an even footing with God? We were created by a Divine source and empowered with free will to make our own choices in life, but do we really have all the control? Or just some of the control?
For example, if someone were to lose a loved one or even their entire family in a car accident, I do not believe it was because he or she was focused on it. Life is full of unexpected and inexplicable tragedies and events that challenge us to find emotional and spiritual reserves to carry on.
Coming from a traditional religious background while becoming open-minded about other spiritual concepts, I think it is unnecessary to force a decision about the law of attraction. Its wisdom seems more like common sense from my grandmother.
Even if you do not accept that people have full power to create their own reality, it still benefits you to think positively, to have big dreams, to feel confident that good things will come your way and to work toward getting them – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It’s hard to find any downside in this approach. It sure beats the alternative of thinking negative thoughts, doubting yourself and your abilities, feeling you’re not worthy of asking for more in life and assuming you won’t get it anyway.
