Stepping Stones to Financial Success
Finances — By Harold Kelley on July 25, 2009 at 3:22 pmQuick: Do you know your symbols for financial progress?
It’s not your end-state of being financially secure that we’re referring to, as those symbols are fairly easy to recognize. They might include a well-paying job, sizable bank account, nice home, new car, frequent vacations or generous charitable contributions.
The focus here is on the personal roadmap that will get you there. And it is in defining these critical signposts that Personal Semiotics can help you the most.
Examples might include overpaying credit cards or mortgages by a small amount, saving a predetermined percentage of your income, or contributing to your 401K or IRA every month.
Other symbols that you’re on the right path may not be as obvious, but they should be recognized too. Perhaps you work on chopping down one household expense each month. (Are you really watching Showtime all that much?) Maybe revisiting your life insurance coverage and actually increasing it will lead to a greater feeling of security. Waiting an extra month or an extra quarter to trade in your car may be prudent. After all, you’re driving it for free. Finally, consolidating your education loans to secure a better rate and lower payment can be symbolic as well.
For each person, these markers may be different. The key in this exercise is to identify those actions or symbols that will leave you feeling as if you’re making progress toward your goal of financial independence. Because it is by feeling as if you’re already on the road to financial success that you will stay on course. And recognizing all the small but important steps you are taking is the best GPS you can use. Personal Semiotics teaches us to recognize and surround ourselves with those symbols.
Use the templates in Chapter 14 of Personal Semiotics – Discover the Secret Success Codes to Your Ideal Life Path to guide you. And start complimenting yourself emotionally for a job well done. The financial rewards should be just around the bend.
